The Prestige!!!!! (Need I say BALE???) :p hee hee

Superman Returns, Stranger than Fiction, Hollywoodland, World Trade Center, Thank you for not smoking, The Departed, United 93, Marie Antionette and Little Miss Sunshine are the ones I have seen, or well, had on while I surfed the net and got a play by play from Chad.

I do have to say I have yet to find a movie from 06 to wow me. There were some good ones, but nothing great. I liked Supreman a lot, but I did not love it. I wanted to love Prestige, but didn't. Stranger then Fiction was very, very good though. Thought Will Ferrel was great in it and a wonderful diversion for him.

I think the biggest let down for me was Little Miss Sunshine. Coming from a VERY VERY dysfunctional family I failed to connect with this move, nor find it original or entertaining. I found it quite predicatable, and the best bits ripped off from movies I had seen previously. I have to say I really am scratching my head on why it is getting the accolades it is. But that's just me.

Yay for finding someone else who saw Stranger Than Fiction! That movie was criminally underwatched and underappreciated. Will Ferrel was excellent, but Maggie Gyllenhaal stole every scene. She was amazing.

I agree that Little Miss Sunshine has been somewhat overrated, which is why it's not in my top 10. I still think it's pretty good though. It's a solidly well-acted and well-written film. I didn't find it to be predictable or unoriginal at all, at least not more than most movies.

I guess it was a pretty decent year for movies, wasn't it?

Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno) - just saw that last week - really liked it, despite how dark it was. Had me thinking about it for days afterwards.

The Prestige - I need to see this!

The Good German - this too!

And I loved V for Vendetta. I think it was actually my #1 from the year.

You liked Miami Vice eh? What did you like about it? I only heard one review that totally panned it as a big ol' mess in many ways.

2006 has been called the Year of the Mexican Directors and rightly so: #2 (Alfonso Cuarón), #4 (Guillermo del Toro), and #6 (Alejandro González Iñárritu).

2006 was also one of the best years for sci-fi and fantasical movies in a while: Children of Men, Pan's Labyrinth, Superman Returns, The Fountain, A Scanner Darkly, The Prestige, and V for Vendetta.

I can't really put my finger on it, but I just think V for Vendetta could have been better, probably in the area of direction. It was certainly very good, and I enjoyed it very much.

I'm glad to hear you liked Pan's Labyrinth. One of my primary criteria for what constitutes a great movie is that it must make you think about it for days after seeing it. Another is that it must engender post-viewing discussion. That's part of why I like movies with ambiguous endings so much. There's always lots to think and talk about when the ending is open to interpretation. Pan's Labyrinth certainly fulfills both of those criteria marvelously.

Miami Vice is a bit of a mess, but it has two things going for it: (1) It's directed by Michael Mann, who is one of the best American directors currently making films. His films have a consistent and unique visual style and thematic approach that mark him as a modern American auteur. (2) I loved "Miami Vice" (the TV show) when I was a kid. The movie successfully captured and updated the tone of the TV series for me.

Later,
Ed

Hmmm, maybe I'll give Miami Vice a rental then. I liked it too when it was on in the 80's.
